The Art of finding Joy in the Little Things

Ok, so this is what’s on my mind today…

The nursery. The joy I feel at the nursery (not the baby nursery…oh no…those years are over. That ship has sailed). I’m talking about the flower nursery.

I anxiously await late spring when the nursery fills up with flowers and it’s safe to plant in our high elevation town. It’s tough growing here for sure. But dang it if I don’t start going crazy like a lady at a Macy’s shoe sale when I see all of the gorgeous, vibrant blooms at the nursery.

GIVE ME ALL OF THE FLOWERS!

Last week I took my oldest with me to the nursery. I don’t know if it inspires her as much as it does me (she’s a teen so I’m going to take a guess and say NO). But when I walk in it’s downright religious. My smile comes out and I’m ping ponging around the place like a kid at an Easter egg hunt.

It’s amazing how such a simple thing like a quick visit to a nursery can absolutely lighten up your day and make you feel joyful. It got me to thinking about the little things. The small details of life that you can find joy in.

For instance, it’s easy to feel super joyful when you get off a plane in Maui and the plumeria blasts you in the face and you know you won’t have to do any dishes or laundry for a week but that’s a rare thing right?

So what about the small things in life that we sometimes overlook as mundane or everyday?

It sounds super corny even as I write it but the flowers, the birds a blue sky with puffy white clouds, a big hug from one of your kids, a kiss on the head from your partner as he passes by. Ya know, the little things, those are the things that we need to feel joyful about. Those everyday events that we may take for granted.

I’ve tried really hard to make myself more present and conscious of those little things that can make a simple day joyful. Things that can throw a smile on my face or even something that gets me stop and take a deep breathe like taking 15 minutes out of my day to go to the nursery.
Pushing into mid-life (I can’t believe I’m writing that!) it seems I’m finally, literally stopping to smell the roses. I think what recognizing these little things does for me is to not only spark a little joy in to my day but reminds me to be grateful for each day that I get to walk this great, big earth, surrounded by the people I love the most. And having a grateful heart seems to make me a less cranky person…go figure! Honestly guys, this isn’t some sort of a mystery and I am definitely not a guru of any kind. It’s just that sometimes we forget. Life gets crazy and we literally forget to try to take in little things that bring you happiness. So this is more like a PSA reminder 😜

My little son came up to me the other day and curled up in my lap. He squished his chubby cheek against mine and said “Mom, you’re my favorite.” My boy is a sweet kind hearted soul who often whispers sweet nothings in to my ear and I’ll be honest, on busy days when I’m distracted or stressed sometimes I don’t let those sweet words sink in but this day I stopped and soaked up his love and I felt a burst in my heart that can only be described as JOYFUL and GRATEFUL. Pure JOY I tell you!

I hope you’re finding the moments to take in the little things that bring you joy this week.
And I’ll leave with an outtake that my sweet girl took of me. Thanks to the little red head for being my blog photographer.
